This publication presents an illustration depicting the general morphology of Matisia sclerophylla (Malvaceae), a little-known tree endemic to the rainforests of the Cauca and Valle departments in western Colombia. The beautiful drawing featured on this cover pays tribute to the great Colombian scientific illustrator, biologist Marcela Morales. It shows in great detail the distinctive characteristics of the indumentum, the terminal buds, the leathery leaves, the floral parts, and the fruits of this species, which allow it to be distinguished from its congeners in the section Longipedes of the genus Matisia.
This species is part of one of the three preliminary studies on the revision of the genera Matisia and Quararibea (Malvaceae) included in this issue. These studies describe 18 new tree species from South America and present identification keys for the 41 known species in the sections Calyculatae and Longipedes of the genus Matisia.
